The New Canaan Volunteer Ambulance Corps was founded 35 years ago in February 1975 and was staffed by volunteers riding shifts from 6 PM to midnight. Our first ambulance, purchased in March 1975 was a Cadillac station wagon that was housed behind the Town Hall. Shifts expanded to 6PM to 6 AM on weekdays and 24 hours shifts on the weekends by April 1975. In our first year, NCVAC responded to a total of 80 calls.
In February of 1976, the Lions Club purchased pagers and radios for the Corps and the Duty Station was moved to the Red Cross. In June, NCVAC became a twenty-four hour emergency medical service. We responded to our first Mass Casualty Incident - a train wreck - in July 1976. In response to this MCI, in February 1977, NCVAC developed a Regional Disaster Plan to effectively manage MCIs. NCVAC headquarters was moved back to the Town Hall in early 1977, and in April 1978 we acquired a second emergency vehicle - a used Horton Ambulance.
The Emergency Medical Services Commission was formed in July of 1981. NCVAC moved its headquarters again in March 1983, this time to a former school shop facility at 182 South Avenue, adjacent to the Police Headquarters. This facility served as our headquarters for 26 years.
In May of ‘87 NCVAC became certified to use defibrillators and we experienced our first “save” in October of that year. In December 1990 Rescue 911 aired our cardiac save of fireman John Di Panni!
The Town of New Canaan contracted with Norwalk Hospital to provide twenty-four hour paramedic service to our town in June 1996. The medics work in conjunction with NCVAC volunteers and are trained to provide Advanced Life Support (ALS) services. Later that year, New Canaan's citizens donated funds to purchase a Paramedic Response Vehicle (Fly Car)
In 1998, the Police Department were trained to use defibrillators and began carrying portable defirillators in their patrol cars. In November the police “saved” a life with this new piece of equipment.
Also in 1998, the EMS Bike Patrol was founded in an effort to provide better response time in crowded situations such as the Family Fourth at Waveny and the Halloween and Memorial Day parades. In 2006, NCVAC added a third ambulance to its fleet and provided care for over 1500 patients.
Thanks to the generous support of the Town of New Canaan and its residents, our new headquarters building was completed in June 2009. Our new HQ will enable us to continue to grow as an organization and contiue to serve New Canaan with the hightest standard of care. in addition, we have applied for LEEDs certification which, when granted, will make the new NCVAC HQ the first public "green" building in New Canaan.
Our 52 riding members responded to over 1650 emergency medical calls last year. if helping your community interests you, we encourage you to take an EMT course and join the NCVAC family! |
